"Our second stay here, loved every minute. Great house."
The Rigby family August 2006
Oban is five miles from Connel, and is a town with a population of 7500 people. It is built around the harbour and the main street has a wide selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. The town is overlooked by McCaig's Tower which is a replica of the coliseum in Rome. You can walk up to the tower and get a panoramic view across Oban and over to Mull. It is especially scenic at sunset.
There are many castles and historic buildings to visit, all with enormous local history, more details can be found at the Tourist Information Centre.
Oban has its own whisky distillery which produces Oban single malt, and that is worth a visit.
Oban is known as 'The Gateway to the Isles' and there is a huge variety of trips and excursions available, by land and sea. You will find day trips to many of the local islands including Mull, Iona, Coll and Tiree. There are also many different wildlife cruises in the area and for the more adventurous there are trips on fast ribs.
